OUR WORK IN MOZAMBIQUE
The Burnet Institute’s Centre for International Health has two offices in Mozambique, the capital, Maputo and Chimoio.
Why we work in Mozambique
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. Poverty is widespread and increasing. For instance, life expectancy for women has dropped to just 39 years. The HIV epidemic is also worsening which is a major contributing factor to increased poverty in Mozambique. Communities, especially those in rural areas are in increasing distress as they try to cope with the many social and economic impacts of HIV and AIDS. The Government cannot cope with an epidemic of this magnitude on its own and needs strong local community organisations to assist with the national response to HIV and AIDS.
What Burnet does with local organisations
Burnet has been working in Mozambique for eight years and our focus is on developing the capacity of local organisations so they are better able to respond, alongside Government, to the increasing needs of AIDS affected communities. We work in the central provinces, where HIV prevalance is highest. We take a holistic approach to capacity development and help local organisations acquire greater capability across a number of key areas such as management and governance as well as HIV technical areas so they can deliver effective HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services. Formal and informal training, ongoing mentoring and support and the provision of resources form the core of our capacity development approach.
What the local organisations we work with do in the community
Your donation to our Mozambique program will provide local organisations with the resources they need to continue their very important work within their communities, providing counselling and education for the community and critical care and support for orphans and vulnerable children so they can have enough food, get an education and have someone to count on and care for them. Your support will also enable community carers to continue their very demanding voluntary work with the sick and dying in their community.
