PHOTO EXHIBITION
A moment in Mozambique

Guilhermina Inacio and her granddaughter Inez
This exhibition is dedicated to Guilhermina Inacio
1964 – 2006, Chimoio, Mozambique.
This exhibition is also in remembrance of the millions or mothers, brothers, sisters and sons who, like her, have lost their life to AIDS. Guilhermina died days after this photo was taken and it was with generosity and grace that she allowed us into her home to document the work of the community carers who were tending her.
So it is also with great optimism that we bring this exhibition to life. And we hope that by illuminating the challenge that HIV and AIDS brings, that our leaders, in government and in the community, and everyday Australians like you and me, will never forget those who are most in need of our support.

Women are more vulnerable to HIV than men – biologically, economically and socially. In regions where the statistics for HIV infection in young woman has reached up to 40%, the importance of personal strength is undeniable. |

Becoming a sex worker for many women is not a matter of choice. In order to make choices about their own health and wellbeing, these women need the freedom of economic empowerment. |

Given the level of poverty and premature death in many African countries, it’s amazing how resilient the children are. Education plays a huge role in providing children with the skills to look ahead to a brighter future, and the ability to make better decisions. |

The trauma felt by any child facing the death of a parent is understandable, but when AIDS is the cause of death, the tragedy is so much worse. Children grieving for dying or dead parents are often stigmatised by society through this association with AIDS. The distress and social isolation experienced by these children is strongly exacerbated by the discrimination that often surrounds HIV and AIDS. |

If it wasn’t for the kindness and compassion of the dozens of volunteers and carers, communities simply wouldn’t have any hope in responding to the AIDS crisis. The importance of carers is often overlooked and yet they play such a vital role. |

As it’s now decades since we first heard of AIDS, it’s all too easy for us to become desensitised to its tragedy. Hearing the staggering figures and seeing countless images of the destruction this epidemic is causing, it’s sometimes hard to fathom what these things really mean. And harder still to relate them to our own lives. Inevitably we’re left unable to comprehend the loss. |

In the midst of this devastation, grandmothers have emerged as the ‘unsung heroes’ of Africa, having to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of tragedy. Burying their own children, the grandmothers then have to take on the role of ‘parent’ for the newly orphaned children. |

One of the most devastating struggles facing those living with HIV or AIDS is stigma. Facing discrimination, shunned by family and cast out from their communities, these people are often given little opportunity in life. |

Men in countries across Africa are learning that there is a cost to pay for the things patriarchy has taught and allowed them. Concerned about the future generations, men are beginning to appreciate the need for constructing new and alternative masculinities. |

Despite the challenges of millions of children growing up without parents, there is there is still hope. Children affected by HIV and AIDS are part of the solution and, with their families and communities, can play a vital role in making the changes needed to combat this epidemic. |
